If my server is at www.domain.com and I attempt to use the PHP mail() function with headers "From: xyz@domain.com", the From header fails and reverts to "xzy@host27.linode.com". However, if I set the PHP From header to -anything- other than domain.com (i.e. "From xyz@different.com") it works just fine - i.e. the received e-mail shows up as from xyz@different.com as

11:27	<sfinman>	So! Having been right about modern email software, if you claim PHP is antiquated, what's your alternative? I've dabbled with Ruby, but PHP5 seems pretty mainstream to me.
