| 08:32 | <guff> | @jesperj: A better option is probably to install the LUKS support packages into the original system, partition the second drive how you want it and mount it somewhere, then rsync everything across (i.e. basically just image the original install). Then you can boot either one to your hearts content once you set up crypttab. |

| 08:33 | <jesperj> | yes it does sound a bit harder... but maybe it is worth it |
| 08:35 | <guff> | @jesperj: One thing you could do is practise a few times in Virtualbox/QEMU/VMware/etc. When I first used filesystem encryption, I spent some time just trying it under virtualisation (where I can't break anything), then you'll be able to form your own method that works for how you think. |
| 08:36 | <guff> | In fact, for every major change I do, I tend to try it under virtualisation a few times just to be sure I know what I'm doing and what the results will be. |
| 08:36 | <jesperj> | Im not sure I understand that process fully. installing LUKS and partition the target drive is understood. But I need to learn about crypttab to understand how to dualboot into it I guess. |

| 17:16 | <dpkg> | i guess webmin is a lame web-based interface for unsafe system administration for Unix. Check it out at http://webmin.com/ Remember, dondelelcaro *hates* webmin. "i'd rather sit on the floor shoving table knives into live electrical outlets than run webmin on an exposed server." See http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2005/12/msg00790.html about the removal. Don't use their .debs, they are of extremely poor quality. |

| 21:49 | <_2> | i found the root cause of the boot issue i was asking about yesterday. "no link in /dev/disk/by-uuid/ for the usbstick" it seems that the system can handel partitionless internal disks (ide/scsi/sata) but can't seem to handle external partitionless (usb in particular) creating a partition and migrating to there fixed my boot issue. ;/ |
| 21:52 | <_2> | some how that seems backwards, that i can cleanly boot a partitionless internal disk with grub2/debian etch, but can't do the same with and external (usb) grub2 debian etch by root=UUID=* |
